How would you describe your talent?

I am a Lyric Soprano Opera Singer, married to a fellow opera singer, Bass-baritone Bojan Knezevic and we live in San Francisco, CA where we met in the Young Artist’s program of the SF Opera in 1993.

How long have you been performing with ZinZanni?

I have been performing with Teatro ZinZanni for 12 years and had the amazing privilege of opening and closing the show at ZinZanni San Francisco. I don’t know if I knew during those years how important ZinZanni would become for me and how much the city would miss the exciting, intriguing spiegeltent between Piers 27 & 29 on the Embarcadero.

What has been your favorite show to perform in and why?

My favorite show, I think, was the very first version of License to Kiss because I got to play the villain, with a character named Leona Wonkenheimer, who fell in love with and was redeemed by a robot dog!!

This is your first time at the Seattle tent, what do you think?

Seattle is fantastic!!  The tent here is a little bit bigger, but feels basically the same when we are all out there together performing the show. There have been so many of us, through the years, and I’ve made so many close friends as we’ve rotated through all the different versions, but it has been great to come to the city where it all started.  Norm Langill (ZinZanni President & Artistic Director) and Reenie Duff (Associate Artistic Director) are incredible at finding the highest caliber of people in the business, which I think is one of the most important aspects of Teatro ZinZanni’s success.  Our show is so intimate with the audience, so it is vital that these performers, with unbelievable talent, are also solid, grounded human beings.  The staff, also, has so much experience with assisting and supporting us in every way.  We could not do it without each and every one of them.

The Seattle audience is really great and not surprisingly, very different from the San Francisco audience.  I think in SF, there is a big mix of locals, tourists and business people, who in general, are not as “laid back” in their attitudes and expectations when they go out to be entertained.  Here in Seattle, I feel people are a little more “down to earth” and I don’t feel a sort of “preconceived notion” of what they expect when they come to ZinZanni.  But in both cities, everyone seems pleasantly surprised at the evening and that it is an especially great place to celebrate the special occasions in their lives.

Do you think performing at our San Francisco location better prepared you for Seattle?

Yes, absolutely… all my years at ZinZanni SF have made me feel incredibly at home and very welcomed in Seattle.

Have you gotten to explore the city?  Where have you been?

I have enjoyed getting to know Seattle so much.  Pike Market and Post Alley are fantastic!  I found a great masseuse on Capitol Hill and a fabulous tea shop called Perennial Tea Room.  (You know how we opera singers love our tea!)  I also got to see the Chittenden Locks in Ballard.  And when the family visits, we have so much fun right here in Queen Anne and at the Seattle Center fountain.

Would you come back?

I would come back in a heartbeat!!

What is one cirque act/talent you secretly wish you could do?

I have been so close to so many great circus performers over the years, but I might have to say that the contortionists are just amazing to me.  If my body could bend like that, I’d be on cloud nine.

What is next for you?

With only 1 more week of our run, I’ll be heading back home to  SF to re-connect with family and our life there.  I have several concerts this summer in the Bay area and a trip to New York planned for the fall.  A Diva’s life is always on the go!!

25 Things You Didn’t Know About Jen Ayers

1. Outside of work I aspire to travel the world, live on a beach and sing songs with my family and friends around a fire pit.

2. If I could be any animal, I would be a house cat.  I’d be independent but still get me some love.

3. The last movie I watched at home alone: Vito – an HBO documentary about gay rights activist Vito Russo.  In the theater with my son: Madagascar 3.

4. The last book I read was I Survived The Killing Fields by Seng Kok Ung, also known as Sam Ung, owner/chef of one of my favorite International District restaurants – Phonm Penh Noodle House.

5.  Bali, Indonesia is one of my favorite places!

6. If I could have dinner with three people (alive or dead) I’d dine with John Lennon, The Dalai Lama and Rachel Maddow.

7. My first job was a counter girl at my neighborhood Dairy Queen. I ate a large Heath Bar Blizzard every day on my walk home.

8. Random, senseless violence scares me.

9. Favorite food: Raw fish with lots of wasabi, spicy curry, Snappy Dragon’s Mandarin chicken wings, guacamole and my grandmother’s lasagna.

10. I can’t resist buying soft socks, gardenia scented lotion and rose candy.

11. I’ve always wanted to try mountain climbing, bungee jumping and experiencing an African Safari.

12. Something crazy I’ve done? Skydiving and quitting a “good job with benefits” to go out on the road with my band.

13.  I grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin right across the street from my best friend.

14. How would I describe my family? Passionate, loud, outspoken and lovely.

15. My favorite novel is Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

16. A good day for me is fresh berries, beignets and a latte for breakfast. Then a hike, walk or bike with my family – some time lounging in the sun and playing in a water feature. A sushi dinner al fresco with live music followed by a walk along the beach at sunset.

17. If I could have any super power, it would be to have super hearing abilities or invisibility powers – whichever would best enable me to be a fly on the wall.

18. I have a secret obsession for 80’s butt rock and the Bee Gees!

19. In Seattle, my favorite spot is any place that gives me a view of mountains and water in the same glance, minus power lines. Seward Park works.

20.  Hmmm, the top two countries I would love to visit, Peru and India.

21. My favorite song?  Just one?!  Pink Floyd’s “Fearless,” Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and The Cars’ “Moving In Stereo” into “All Mixed Up”– I consider these two Cars classics ONE tune. There is no separating them even though many radio DJ’s sometimes do. Shame on them! Question #21½? What’s your biggest pet peeve? When someone (or my iPod), plays “Moving In Stereo” and neglects to follow it up with “All Mixed Up”.

22. I’m most proud of being a mother and having learned how to belt out a killer rock scream without damaging my vocal chords.

23. I’ll have a Cazadores Reposado margarita with agave and fresh lime juice on the rocks with salt. Unless it’s “wine-thirty,” in which case I’ll take a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand.

24. The heel of a loaf of crusty white from the Columbia City Bakery, to me, is the coolest thing since sliced bread.

25. How did I decide on my profession? It was probably the day I sang along to the AM radio in the backseat of my Dad’s red mustang with the windows down, the sun shining and my head hanging out the window in the breeze.

See Jen in Return to Paradise until January 27th!

Gangsters Loot the Tent

The story begins long before you get to the tent. Check out this teaser for Gangsters of Love playing at Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle through September 30.

It is finally here!  Gangsters of Love opened June 14th to a full house of adoring fans and freshly minted converts. For this spectacular spectacular, the tent sends you back in time to 1932. America is deep in the depression. Bread lines, unemployment and homelessness are rife. Prohibition, which made the sale and distribution of liquor illegal, has been the law of the land for 13 years. Why on earth did we send you back here, you might be asking yourself?

Oh right, because it is also the age of jazz, Art Deco, and glamor! This show has everything, and we mean everything: Three aerial acts, gangsters, tap dancing, King Kong, Chef Caesar, gambling, socks, cement boots, moxie, jazz, Francine Reed, and so much more. Gangsters of Love features comedian Frank Ferrante, aerialist Dreya Weber, blues vocal powerhouse Francine Reed, Duo Madrona (Ben Wendel and Rachel Nehmer) on trapeze, funnyman Joe DePaul, comic acrobat Andrea Conway Doba, vaudevillian Wayne Doba and juggler rola bola extraordinaire Bernard Hazen. This much talent in one tent is probably illegal, so don’t tell the fuzz!

Chef Erik Carlson has simply outdone himself with his newest five-course extravaganza of flavor. Think we are being biased? Check out the menu! Seriously, he is serving Blue Nose Bass en Parchment with lemon, Mascarpone and fresh herbs, served with garlic saffron rice, broccolini almandine and carrots. We dream in cheesecake! You will not be disappointed.

25 Things You Didn’t Know About Joel Salom

Australian juggling sensation, Joel Salom, appears in Hail Caesar!, Teatro ZinZanni’s current production. In the show, he plays Mick, a maitre d’ looking to make a good impression, as well as controlling his satiric creation, Erik the Dog. He excites audiences with his hilarious juggling routines while intriguing them with unique rhythmic juggling acts. Whether you’ve seen him onstage or had him teach you a juggling lesson or two, here are a few things you may not know about Joel:

1.    I would describe myself as a tall, lanky, funny fella who loves his family and is addicted to juggling shaker balls.

2.    I grew up in Western Australia on a dairy farm.

3.    My family is my favorite thing. My six-year-old son is gregarious and charismatic,  my three-month-old daughter is gorgeous and sleeps, and my wife is my everything: down to earth, practical, beautiful and very honest.

4.    The last movie I saw was Winnie the Pooh; my son came along, too.

5.    I think patience is one of my greatest strengths.

6.    I can’t have a pet; I travel too much.

7.    I’m secretly obsessed with plucking nose hairs.

8.    Something crazy I’ve done is supporting my family by being a freelance comedy juggler! Somehow, it seems to be working very well.

9.   My favorite spot in Seattle could be anywhere as long as I am with my daughter.

10. A good day is a beach day.

11. My life philosophies are: “No hurries, no worries”, “Do what you like and do what you’re good at” and “If you’re going through sh*t, just keep going”.

12. My first job was stilt walking in our local shopping center.

13. My hidden talent is flying trapeze.

14. A memorable Teatro ZinZanni moment was when my then three-year old son walked into the tent during the show, without his pants!  I was doing a scene on stage, he’d wet his pants and needed help (My wife was baby-sitting another performer’s baby).  I gestured for him to go back stage. He waved back. Eventually, he got the idea and, with slumped shoulders he walked back stage. His little, naked butt was the last image – hilariously cute.

15. I cannot resist buying licorice.

16. I’d like to visit India.

17. I love Seattle. The people are so friendly and supportive, the city is easy to navigate, and the festivals at Seattle Center are so much fun.

18. The last book I read was Mind Sight.

19. A song I wrote for my daughter is one of my favorite songs.

20. I aspire to be a patient father, supportive husband, and remember how fortunate I am in so many ways.

21. My drink of choice is strong coffee.

22. If I could be any animal, I’d be a dung beetle. I reckon I’m pretty good at pushing sh*t up a hill. I am a juggler…

23. I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I only speak English.

24. My favorite places to travel are Thailand, Vanuatu, Singapore, and Indonesia.

25. I decided on my profession by accident.

Hail Caesar! ends soon, so hurry in to see Joel and the rest of our talented cast!
